This research is focused on the basic conditions needed for agricultural production; the soil and its capacity and suitability to cultivate different kinds of plants. In other words which plants and their varieties could have enriched the agricultural scene in Western Europe over the centuries? The goal of this research is to find and describe the expansion of different plant cultivation in the west European agricultural history and to explain its role on agricultural growth. Through attempting to place this research into an economic theoretical model, the question arose: Can we use the economic theories in an analysis of the time before the Agricultural Revolution, 1750−1850, despite that they were developed during the Industrial Revolution and after? Or strongly worded; are the economic theories ‘eternal’?
